A Brief Introduction to Medical Instrumentation College
The Medical Instrumentation College of Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences was established in May 2015, the prototype of which was Shanghai Medical Instrumentation College founded in1960 and was firstly subordinated to the State Ministry of Health, and then to the State Pharmaceutical Administration, China Food and Drug Administration and Shanghai Municipal Government, successively. It was the first and the only one of its kind in China to train qualified engineers in the field of medical devices and was reputed as the Cradle of Medical Device Engineers in China. By inheriting the personnel training mode based on the philosophy of the combination of School-Enterprise-Medicine-Supervision-Research, the four preponderant disciplines with multi-dimensions related to medical devices including Medical Device Engineering, Clinical Engineering Technology, Medical Product Management and Health Big Data have been gradually formed. Characterized by the Synthesization of Industry and Education, Integration of Medicine and Engineering, International Cooperation, the College is dedicated to the training of students who will be engaged in the fields of engineering and technical applications such as Medical Equipment Development, Quality Control, Clinical Applications etc., serving for Clinical Medicine and Health Industry. The College mainly consists of six teaching-research divisions and one training center. The four 4-year full-time education programs together with two 3-year vocational education programs are available. The students enrolled are approximately 2100, and the employment rate is over 99 percent. The speciality of both Clinical Engineering Technology and Medical Product Management is the first one of its kind in China, respectively. The Speciality of Clinical Engineering Technology fills the blank in the training of clinical engineers in China, while the Speciality of Medical Product Management is playing a leading role in personnel training for the management of medical products. The Speciality of Biomedical Engineering and Data Science & Big Data Technology focuses on Internet+ and the Construction of New Engineering, training future engineers for the fields of Intelligent Medical Devices and Health Big Data.
The teaching staff of the College consist of those with international perspective and innovative spirit and who are expertised in the respective teaching-research areas of their own, and who are dedicated to the development of medical device and personnel training for the area concerned. The faculty of the College consist of 75 fulltime teachers, including 9 professors, 16 associate professors, 25 with Ph.D. Degree, and 11 Master tutors. Over the past 5 years, the College has undertaken 12 research projects from various sources such as the Key Research Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China, National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China, National Natural Science Foundation of China, Natural Science Foundation of Shanghai, the Key Projects of Science and Technology of Shanghai, etc.. The number of nongovernmental research-service projects adds up to 60. The research fund has totaled more than 7 million Yuan (RMB), in which the research project of Surgical Robot was supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a Sub-Project of the Key Project of Intelligent Robot. Recently the number of research papers published in international and domestic journals or periodicals has added up to 100 or more, of which 25 are indexed by SCI and 31 indexed by EI, respectively. 11 invent patents have been authorized by the National Intellectual Property Administration of the People's Republic of China.
In the New Era the College will further strengthen its education reform to promote the training of Outstanding Engineers, a complete training system integrating Theory, Practice, Skills and Application has been established. Up to now the College has been awarded 2 National Teaching Achievements by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and 6 Teaching Achievements by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, respectively. In addition, three teachers won the reputation of Master Teacher and one Overseas Master Teacher, One National Quality Course, 11 Shanghai Municipal Quality Courses, 20 teaching materials were published including 2 national planned textbooks. The College also won 7 Shanghai Municipal Awards such as Shanghai Municipal Education Pioneer and Shanghai Municipal YuCai Award, etc.. The College is always emphasizing the training of students' ability of practice innovation. Over the past 3 years the students of the College have won more than 80 awards from various national competitions under the guidance of our teachers.
The College possesses complete teaching and experimental facilities with a total value of nearly 40 million Yuan (RMB), including one National Training Base together with 7 Shanghai Municipal Training Bases, one Shanghai Wearable Medical Technology and Device Engineering Research Center, 10 or more modern specialized laboratories or international joint laboratories such as the Lab of Digitalized Medical Instrument Technology, Lab of Medical Transducer Technology, Lab of Operation and Emergency Engineering Technology, Lab of Hemodialysis Technology, Lab of the Testing of Active Medical Devices, and Lab of Artificial Intelligence and Medical Big Data Analysis, etc.. All the laboratories of the College cover an area of approximately 8000 square meters, accommodating 600 students to do the experiments or practice items at the same time.
The College also puts an emphasis on international and domestic exchanges and cooperation, maintaining a persistent Industry-Education-Research cooperation with more than 50 governmental organizations or enterprises concerned, such as the Advanced Research Institute of China Food and Drug Administration, Shanghai Shenkang Hospital Development Center, Shanghai Testing & Inspection Institute for Medical Devices, Zhongshan Hospital attached to FuDan University, Shanghai Medical Equipment Co., Ltd., and Weining Health Science and Technology Group Co., Ltd.. A Policy Research & Safety Evaluation Center for Medical Devices was accordingly established in the College. In addition, both the National Medical Device Quality Supervision & Inspection Center (Branch) and the Joint Laboratory of Medical Device Testing Technology Research are now under the construction in collaboration with Shanghai Testing & Inspection Institute for Medical Devices. On the other hand, the College conducts multidirectional cooperation and exchanges withUniversities or Enterprises from Germany, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Australia, Canada and Japan, etc..
The College is actively promoting the innovation of ideological and political education of our students. More and more outstanding graduates of the College, represented by one of our excellent alumni Mr. Yu Qingming, Chairman of CDMC of SINOPHARM, have actively joined the front line of the industry, making great contributions to the development of modern medical devices in China.
By targeting the Development Strategy of Prehospital Emergency Care, Geriatric Rehabilitation, and General Practitioner of Shanghai and aiming at the Development Goal of The Thirteenth Five Plan of SUMHS, the Medical Instrumentation College will speed up its speciality construction to achieve the GOAL of Leading in China, First Class in Shanghai, and further promote its Overall Competitiveness, Schooling Vitality, and Service Ability.
